Learn To Draw

In order to "draw what you see" you will have to learn to draw lines, shapes, and lights and darks that combine to make a whole drawing. Your logical mind, that labels everything it sees, will not be a part of the drawing process.

At hand there is no quick and easy way to learn to draw really. Learning to draw can be a lifetime project, as any professional artist will tell you. There are techniques, however, to learn to draw which will help you improve your art quickly and if they will not take you to professional status they will at least improve your amature artwork.

If you talk to a sketch artist, they will tell you that much of what they do has to do with tricks learned in art school. Drawing has some pretty fascinating methods that would not occur to you unless you were told them.

In teaching my students how to learn to draw, I generally start with the human form, and specifically with the face. If you can learn how to draw people and in particular the face, you will feel like you have accomplished something, and will be ready to move on to more complex things.

The first step to learning to draw the face is to memorize its proportions. The eyes are about one third of the way down the entire face, for example, and the mouth has a certain width relative to the head.

These vary a little, but not as much as you would think, and once you start to notice the proportions of things, you have already started to learn to draw.

People have several different reasons to learn to draw, and all of these reasons are valid. Some want to learn to draw flash animations, to make drawing floor plans or landscape drawings and I fully support this project. Flash is really exciting for those of us in the artistic world. It gives people an easy way to make simple animations without the time consuming, and often expensive processes that normally go with it.

An additional excellent reason to learn to draw is to design fashion. If you are someone who makes garments, whether a professional fashion designer, or simply someone who just likes to make things for yourself or your friends, drawing ability is a must.

If you learn to draw well, it will allow you to really flesh out your ideas before you start actually creating the patterns, and this can be a great help in getting things right the very first time.

Once you start learning how to draw, you might even decide to make a career out of it, and there are probably plenty of art schools that would be happy to have you. There is no limit to where you can go with art!

As a young child it was all in the interpretation of the drawing. It didn't matter that what you drew didn't really look like what you were seeing; all that mattered was the act of representing a favorite object or person that you saw.

As you get older it matters a lot and you will need to have a keen eye for lines and shapes, there are many on line courses on how to learn to draw available and you should sign up for one if you are really committed.
